Build Power Program Instructors
The Union Cooperative Initiative (UCI) is recruiting a new team of casual and project-based Education Program Instructors to support the growing union cooperative movement in British Columbia.
We will also be hiring a new Education Director or Co-Directors for core monthly hours from this cohort. To start, this will be variable and project-based work as the UCI builds out sustaining revenue streams with the aim to create stable, permanent work opportunities for all UCI network workers. The Education Program is supported by the UCI Managing Director and Operations worker team.
All workers in the UCI Network start in Cooperative Community Builder Roles. The wage rate for these roles is tied to the living wage rate is currently $25.68 an hour. All new network workers receive 4 hours of paid training to the network, including a history of union cooperatives and 1-hour paid training to the union.
Education work in the UCI Network is at the Union Cooperative Organizer, Developer, and Representative classification and is compensated from $42.16 to $60.02 an hour plus 20% in lieu of benefits. This work is covered under collective agreement with the Arts and Cultural Workers Union (ACWU), IATSE Local B778.

The UCI is a non-profit solidarity cooperative established in 2021 to support the development of union cooperatives as part of a social and solidarity economy in British Columbia. Our cooperative builds an economy that works for all by supporting the development, incubation, and operation of unionized cooperatives that are good for people and the planet.
The UCI operates 3 core BUILD programs: BUILD POWER: Worker & Community Training Program, BUILD CO-OPs: Cooperative Development and UCI Cooperative Network, and BUILD COMMUNITY: Purchasing Alliance & Local Solidarity Economy Movement Building.
DIRECTOR JOB DESCRIPTION
Working under the direction of the UCI Board of Directors, the UCI is seeking a part-time Education Director to lead the development of the Build Power Program. This is a BC-based position with needed availability for regular meetings in Victoria or Vancouver. The ideal candidate(s) will bring a minimum of 10 years of experience leading a community-based education program.
INSTRUCTOR JOB DESCRIPTION
Working under the direction of the Managing Director, the UCI is seeking casual and project-based instructors for the Education Program to join the UCI Network. Projects will range in duration from short, modular lessons as a part of online course offerings to full-day and multi-month evening or weekend courses. Workers will have the ability to direct their own training through the UCI network and are compensated for all administration, facilitation, and course development time.
The UCI offers both in-house training and fee-for-service training to partner unions, cooperatives, and non-profit community organizations.
A passion for community development, dedication to social and economic justice, and interest in building a solidarity economy is required.
The UCI has developed a series of training programs on cooperative development, community organizing, and labour union worker organizing. The curriculum draws from the People, Power, and Change framework from Marshall Ganz, BC Federation of Labour’s Organizing Institute, and BC Cooperative Association’s Co-operate Now Bootcamp.
New courses on sales and marketing and cooperative enterprise operations are also in development. The UCI also welcomes instructors and facilitators bringing their own curriculum to the network. Curriculum will remain property of the worker and will be licensed before being added to our education offering guide.
QUALIFICATIONS
A minimum of 3-5 years in facilitation and development of community based education programs using the principles of popular and adult education is required. The UCI recognizes informal community oriented training and organizing as relevant experience.
A combination of education and experience in two or more of the following areas will be useful: the labour union movement, cooperative development, community advocacy, electoral and political campaigns, faith-based and community organizing, and volunteer work with non-profit community organizations.
Familiarity, understanding, and support of the principles of labour unions and cooperatives is essential for success in this role.
JOB LOCATION
The UCI welcomes applications from local and remote instructors and facilitators. The majority of training currently takes place out of the UCI Studio in Chinatown, Vancouver. Workers must be available to participate in paid online program coordination meetings every two months.
